AJA supports multiple workflows , including HDR

High dynamic range ( HDR ) has been a much-discussed topic in the broadcast and media industry in recent times . In your opinion , what can HDR truly bring for broadcasters ? Robert Stacy : It is clear to most that HDR provides a better viewing experience , which for broadcasters means that they can differentiate their content from their competition . Rec 709 , which is what standard broadcast uses today , only provides about six stops of dynamic range ; however , using HDR , that is expanded to nearly 14 stops of dynamic range .
Using our FS-HDR real-time HDR and wide colour gamut ( WCG ) converter with video processing powered by the Colorfront Engine , broadcasters and producers can take the wide dynamic range available from cameras and preserve as much of it as possible . This offers viewers increased contrast and luminance ranges , a broader and richer colour palette , and allows the delivery of an immersive viewing experience .
HDR has also been much associated with 4K / Ultra HD ( UHD ). However , in Asia-Pacific , where many countries are still operating in SD , do you think HD + HDR can be a more viable option ? Stacy : This is an excellent question , because a lot of broadcasters have been looking at how to provide a more immersive viewing experience through options such as going to 4K / UHD . But with that , comes a lot of technical problems , and the necessity

to replace or substantially upgrade existing infrastructure .
A 4K / UHD infrastructure upgrade comes at a price premium , whether you go 12G or IP ; and at the end of that , the broadcaster truly needs to know there is going to be a return on that investment , which in many cases is not as clear , relative to that expense .
On the other hand , taking an existing SD plant and converting it to HD is relatively cost-effective , and adding HDR to the cost is rather nominal . With support from AJA , a broadcaster can do that for less than US $ 2,000 per channel . If you have an existing HD plant , adding HDR is relatively simple if you strategically place our FS-HDR product , which supports four HD channels in real time for just $ 7,995 .
As of June 14 , we have released V2.5 of the product , which adds additional Colorfront Engine parameter controls for ITU-R BT . 2408 SDR to HDR , and HDR to SDR mapping — ColorTemperature ; tint ; exposure ; an enhanced single channel mode for 4K / UltraHD workflows , which provides simultaneous 4K / UHD and 2K / HD outputs with independent format and HDR settings ; and most importantly for broadcasters , is the addition of BBC HLG
LUTs , which provide additional HDR conversion options conforming to ITU-R BT . 2408 .
What is AJA bringing to Broadcast- Asia2018 that will support HDR workflows ? Stacy : AJA has an ever-expanding range of products that support HDR . I have already mentioned the FS-HDR , but we will also be having a video preview of our upcoming HDR Image Analyzer , which is our newest collaboration with our partner Colorfront , whom we also collaborated with on the FS-HDR .
The HDR Image Analyser provides real-time waveform histogram and vectorscope monitoring tools , supports up to 4K / UHD @ 60p and has very sophisticated tools for live production and post production , as well as QC and mastering . We believe that this HDR analyser will become an essential element of any HDR workflow .
We are also showing our Ki Pro Ultra Plus recorder , which will record and play back HDR ; we are showing our Hi5-4K-Plus converter , which takes a quadlink 3G signal and converts it to HDMI 2.0 , along with HDR support . There is also the newly launched Hi5-12G solution , which is a similar product to the

Hi5-4K-Plus , but supports 12G and is making its Asian debut at BroadcastAsia2018 .
For editors and post-production professionals , we are showing our Io 4K Plus and KONA 4 solutions , which also offer HDR support .
Are there any other trends or technologies that you see having an impact on the broadcast industry , particularly in the Asia-Pacific region ? Stacy : Of course , I think HDR is big and our portfolio is an expression of this belief . However , the next emerging technology that will be on broadcasters ’ radar is IP , and AJA is also showcasing a number of conversion solutions in this arena for both — including our newly released IPR-10G-HDMI , which takes IP from 10G and converts it to HDMI for monitoring .
The FS-HDR is a real-time HDR and wide colour gamut ( WCG ) converter with video processing powered by the Colorfront Engine , and is a headlining offering from AJA that affirms the company ’ s support for HDR broadcast workflows .
