Calrec’s Type R making its regional debut
Making its regional debut for Calrec
at the show is Type R, the company’s
IP-based radio system. With the
combination of standard network-
ing technology and configurable
soft panels, Type R allows users to
customise systems according to their
needs.
Packed within a 2RU frame, Type
R is integrated with I/O resources,
and supports up to three independ-
ent mixing environments in a single
core. Type R is also equipped with
the ability to use multiple mixing
engines, allowing users to deploy the
IP-based system as independent stu-
dio consoles, microphone processors
or utility mixing.
Type R’s physical control system
comprises three panels: a fader panel,
a large soft panel, and a small soft
panel. Each panel is compatible with
commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
hardware, and can be powered
over Ethernet to keep cabling to a
minimum.
Fader panels can be added or
removed by plugging or unplugging
an Ethernet cable, creating a radio
infrastructure that is easily expanda-
ble. Additionally, soft panels can be

utilised in either landscape or portrait
formats, providing specific function-
ality for talent while ensuring overall
control is maintained by the station’s
technical team.
Anthony Harrison, international
sales manager, Calrec, explains:
“Type R is a new product for a new
market sector for Calrec — radio.
It offers a modular, soft and highly
configurable solution with a native
IP backbone that can be adapted
to suit any scenario, big or small, so
is perfect for many opportunities
in the Asian market. We think it’ll
have great appeal in this territory,
and expect it to prove very popular
during the exhibition.”
At BroadcastAsia booth 6C3-01,
Calrec is also presenting the RP1, a
remote production unit that is packed
in a 2RU rack-mount box and includes
the company’s Bluefin2 processing
technology.
RP1 provides local digital signal
processing (DSP) to enable the next
generation of monitor mixes and
interruptible foldbacks (IFBs) with no
latency, says Calrec. It gives operators
in a remote studio control over chan-
nel functions such as microphone
gains, aux send/monitor mix levels
and fader levels while providing a
mechanism to embed audio into
existing backhaul technologies, such
as SDI.
“ Today’s viewer is watching
broadcasts in many different ways,
including streaming and online. This
creates a demand for more content,
which traditionally would cost a lot
more money and time,” Harrison
adds. “Calrec’s RP1 shows how to
get around some of the key issues
surrounding remote production and
create more high-quality broadcasts
for considerably less cost and greater
efficiency. This is a pretty new broad-
cast workflow that will create exciting
new opportunities in the Asian mar-
ket sector.”
