Dell EMC tackles key infrastructure needs for the broadcast and media industry

Dell EMC has forecast that the amount of global data will reach 18 zettabytes by 2020 . In terms of storage and archive requirements , how can broadcasters and media organisations keep up with this development ? Charles Sevior : Storage requirements for the broadcast and media sector are growing exponentially . We are creating more content through the use of higher resolution cameras and formats , increased use of multi-camera capture , increased shoot-to-use ratio from reality TV show formats , and increased number of channels .
Besides , with the proliferation of video-on-demand ( VoD ) and content streaming platforms , viewers are gaining access to long-tail content and we are also tailoring “ catch-up ” and “ behind the scenes ” content . All this is helping to engage better with viewers and satisfy the growing demand for high-quality rich content .
Dell EMC tackles this capacity growth requirement head-on by offering scale-out storage solutions based on file ( NAS ) and object ( cloud ) technology . This , provides easy-to-manage storage with both high-performance and low total cost of ownership ( TCO ) attributes .
What are some of the highlights that Dell EMC is bringing to BroadcastAsia2018 to address the needs of broadcasters and media organisations ? Sevior : Dell EMC solution specialists with a strong focus on the broadcast , media and telecom sectors are attending BroadcastAsia2018 to meet with our customers and partners , and show how our end-to-end infrastructure is being leveraged by customers across the world .
We are focusing on our storage solutions Isilon , for high-performance NAS shared storage and ECS for
While one of the most recognisable brand names in the world , what Dell EMC ( BroadcastAsia2018 booth 4Q2-05 ) is offering the broadcast and media industry goes beyond just storage , as Charles Sevior , CTO , APJ + GC , Unstructured Data Solutions , Dell EMC , explains .

cloud-scale object storage that is S3 native . Recently , we announced the launch of Isilon Cloud , in partnership with Google Cloud Platform .
We are also showcasing a few of the great Dell creative monitors . These support 4K / Ultra HD ( UHD ), 8K , high dynamic range ( HDR ) and even curved displays for the ultimate desktop experience . In addition , our latest Dell Networking products are on the stand , including the S4248FB , which supports 10 / 40 / 100GbE and includes 25 / 50GbE rates , which are of great interest for uncompressed 4K / UHD media content .
Can you also elaborate on the roles cloud and AI are playing in Dell EMC ’ s development roadmap ? Sevior : The media and entertainment sector ( M & E ) is starting to embrace the use of artificial intelligence ( AI ) techniques to automate some manual process in content management and content usage analytics .
We are seeing this being integrated into some of the media asset management and content analytics products . For instance , Dell EMC Isilon is being used by customers in many different industries as the core storage platform for training data sets used in deep learning with convolutional neural networks . In addition , customers are adopting cloud operating models but not wanting to be locked in to one public cloud vendor . Leveraging solutions from VMware and Dell EMC , we can provide the benefits of a multi-cloud solution without vendor lock-in .
We see multi-cloud as a key infrastructure requirement for the future . Broadcast and media customers can achieve the perfect blend of on-premise and outsourced services , achieving uncompromising lowlatency performance and well-managed cost and content security .
Transforming your business : Dell EMC ’ s solutions , including multicloud solutions , are designed to provide beneficial transformations for broadcast and media businesses .
You also spoke at the APB IP Master Class in Singapore on June 25 . How do you see IP transforming the broadcast and media industry ? Sevior : The adoption of IP technology as a replacement for SDI video and audio connections in media facilities seems like a simple technology switch — and very dependent on the cost and utility of the replacement technology .
However , the outcome of making this change is really leading to the benefits of workforce transformation and digital transformation in broadcast and media businesses . By leveraging virtualisation and cloud operation models , and being able to break beyond the limits of physical SDI cable lengths , we open up the possibility for remote live broadcast facilities and global collaboration on live creative productions . This will lead to decreased cost and a lower barrier of entry for new players in the dyna mic M & E sector .
For example , the recent introduction of the NEP Australia remote production hubs , in partnership with Fox Sports Australia and Telstra Australia , has resulted in the practical separation of the live production team from the outside broadcast ( OB ) venue , camera crew and commentary team . This reduces staff travel and increases productivity — resulting in workforce transformation driven by new technologies .
Some of our customers in the content creation space are looking to leverage remote creative workers without needing them to sit directly inside the VFX / animation / post-production facility . The challenge here is to achieve a high-quality , low-latency user interface without reducing the tight security around the content . The security requirements of the Motion Pictures Association of America ( MPAA ) are now evolving to the trusted partner network — which requires a security transformation .
Just like many other industries under taking signi ficant business transformation , the broadcast and media industry is “ growing up ” and adopting industry standard IT technologies , with all of the inherent benefits .
