MediaGeniX urging
broadcasters to
think content-centric
The line between linear and on-
demand is blurring, making it
imperative for broadcasters to
think content-centric, says Johan
Vanmarcke, managing director,
Asia, MediaGeniX.
At present, many traditional
broadcast organisations have two
working units in place — one that
manages the linear TV aspect, and
a creative unit that focuses on
digital strategies. This is creating
a situation where these groups
work based on different workflows,
without leveraging enough of
each other’s strengths, Vanmarcke
observes.
To allow broadcasters to bet-
ter target content to audiences on
both linear and on-demand plat-
forms, MediaGeniX is offering the
WHAT’sOn broadcast management
software solution at booth 4P4-05.
WHAT’sOn allows broadcasters,
on-demand service providers or
telecoms alike to launch channels
or set up cost-effective additional
on-demand services while optimis-
ing workflow and infrastructure.
It offers integrated modules
that addresses the following: linear
scheduling, promotion and inter-
stitial management, media man-
agement, workflow automation,
standards integration, content and
rights management, analytics and
finance, and video-on-demand
(VoD).
In particular, Vanmarcke is keen
to highlight the new VoD schedul-
ing tools MediaGeniX is offering.
He explains: “If you go on-demand,
it involves a lot of people and cost.
Software automation thus allows
you to do more for less and VoD
can potentially bring new and more
effective workflows.”
As part of its content-centric
message, MediaGeniX also believes
that broadcasters need to take a
closer look at the content they can

offer. For example, what rights do
they have on the content? What
distribution platforms are available
and through which technique can
they generate the most revenue
with a particular title?
The future of broadcasting, the
company suggests, is about choos-
ing the best possible distribution
technique that offers broadcasters
and their viewers the best possible
added value throughout the entire
lifecycle of the content — be it on
linear or VoD platforms.

ways of working, advises Van-
marcke. “If you do not begin to
move into the on-demand space,
you will lose out and your revenues
will start to decline year-on-year,”
he concludes.
Stagetec Asia’s Avatus
enabling IP remote production
Hear Paul Lim, senior project engineer at Stagetec Asia, make some noise at
booth 6D4-01.
Stagetec Asia is displaying Avatus, an IP-based mix-
ing console with 21-inch multi-touch displays. The
console’s control surface and interfaces are connected
through Ethernet, enabling remote production.
Designed based on standardised technologies
and protocols, Avatus facilitates control and can
be integrated with third-party devices. Users can
implement the AES70 standard to enhance inter-
connectivity with other systems.
The interface of Avatus enables customised func-
tion assignments, and is equipped with workflow-
oriented controls. For instance, the touch displays are
able to provide context-related functions.
Another feature of the Avatus is the colour coding
of functional units for rapid and intuitive operation.
Moreover, Avatus provides more than 800 input chan-
nels and 128 sum buses, with channel formats ranging
from mono to 7.1. Other features of Avatus include
loudness metering and multi-band compressor, which
are all integrated with the Stagetec automixer.
Stagetec Asia is also demonstrating the latest
audio processing features of the Crescendo Platinum
audio mixing console at its booth 6D4-01. One new
feature is scene automation that allows users to set
blend curves and times individually for each channel.
Calling it “one of the most important additions”
to basic scene automations, Stagetec Asia high-
lights that this function is “particularly popular with
theatres”, and will be available with the new software
release. In addition, the software update features a
timecode trigger that enables scene events to be
called up at will.
