Magna Systems helps broadcasters in Asia thrive in the face of change

As trusted partners to broadcasters , systems integrators are in a better position than most to access the state of the broadcast industry , as Patrick So , director of Asia Operations , Magna Systems and Engineering ( booth 4S3-05 ), demonstrates .
2017 is shaping up to be another year of change for the broadcast industry . Which technology trends do you expect to have the most profound impact on the broadcast business in 2017 , particularly in Asia-Pacific ? Patrick So : Some of the main areas of change include delivering media to new platforms and thus , redefining the workflow to suit . Also , this year more than ever , 4K / Ultra HD ( UHD ) needs to be considered , as does delivering to social media , over-the-top ( OTT ), subscription videoon-demand ( SVoD ) and other platforms . To ignore this demand can be costly . There is also an emergence of virtual machinesupported product solutions for playout and transcoding , heralding a more efficient , cost-effective means of production .
We are also seeing many second-generation media asset management ( MAM ) Request for Proposals ( RFPs ) coming into the market . These are from customers who already have a MAM , but want to review the market as their business models have changed since their original technology decisions , as well as with new offerings potentially offering better business benefits .
Also in the market are the smaller media customers who are starting to look at archive solutions . While many media companies are considering a cloud solution , for some , the cloud only meets a very limited part of
their specific workflows , leading to other alternatives being evaluated .
Finally , we are seeing a move to virtualised playout as it is now a viable alternative to physical playout servers , especially for those broadcasters who are already well down the IP video path .
What are some of the key highlights at the Magna booth that are addressing these trends ? So : Magna ’ s booth this year covers all of the above and focuses on IP production , workflow and distribution .
You will see Tedial and Telestream specifically providing the workflow management solutions needed to adapt to the changing end platform . There will also be other cutting-edge solutions from Bridge Technologies , Crystal , FileCatalyst , GB Labs , Mediaware , Nevion , TAG Video Systems and TVU Networks .
In an increasingly digital world characterised by evolving consumption patterns and increased competition , what will define a ‘ broadcaster ’ and what can traditional operators do to stay relevant to their viewers ? So : A true broadcaster is , and always will be , defined by the “ live ” aspect of what they do , whether in news , sports , weather or other live information . Viewers will always

want access to that live information ; what is changing is the platform that information is delivered to .
That said , a broadcaster as such can now also be one who has rights to some form of content in a specific territory . Fragmentation of consumers is occurring naturally through the multitude of connected devices and traditional broadcasters need to know as much as possible about who the user using the device is ( information obtained usually through a log-in on a site or via an app ) and what the user ’ s preferences , needs and wants are .
Thorough audience and content analytics will enable broadcasters to effectively monetise content in ways that include ad insertions and that are relevant and appropriate to that specific viewer .

Planetcast migrates playout to the cloud

Planetcast is showcasing its cloud playout and delivery platform , which is designed to help broadcasters create multiple linear channels from their content library , and deliver these content to local distribution platforms . Some key features of the cloud-based service platform include remote content upload , transcoding support for content uniformity , media asset visibility , and automated multi-channel playout by multiple playlists .
The cloud playout and delivery platform is a part of Planetcast ’ s cloud-based content management services , comprising cloud storage and library services , media asset management ( MAM ) on cloud , cloud broadcasting and over-the-top ( OTT ) -based services . This cloud platform , according to Planetcast , provides media operators with its own cloud infrastructure covering the digital media ecosystem from acquisition , production management , post production , content management , transcoding and distribution across a variety of devices for monetisation of content .
Furthermore , the digital platform also features software packages , including analytics , financial and tax packages for global transactions , digital rights management ( DRM ) and service-level agreement ( SLA ) management . Find out more at booth 6N2-01 .
