Guntermann & Drunck highlights KVM
integration into broadcast workflows
KVM systems have an increasing role to play in shaping today’s broadcast
infrastructures. Frank Noelken, Guntermann & Drunck’s (G&D) international
sales manager, explains why and highlights what visitors can expect at
booth 5H5-02.
G&D’s KVM solutions allow
users to handle higher-resolution video, as well as increase
the usability of operating systems. What are some of G&D’s
BroadcastAsia2016 highlights
that will address these issues?
Frank Noelken: At G&D, we believe that video is the most important component of the whole
KVM signal mix: it’s the visible part
when transmitting and switching
computer signals. That’s why our
R&D pays maximum attention to
high-quality image transmission,
for guaranteeing a perfect user
experience.
Accordingly, we’re highlighting
our new compression standard
this year. This has been developed directly by G&D and ensures
latency-free images, even when
the signals have to pass complex
switching processes, or when the
given infrastructure causes bandwidth limitations.
Beyond that we’ve also got a
new KVM extender for totally lossless video transmission of up to 4K/
Ultra HD (UHD) resolution at 60Hz
frame-rate. The DP1.2-VisionXG
system transmits the full video
bandwidth via fibre optics without
using any compression, and at
pixel-perfect 24-bit colour depth
— even over distances of several
kilometres, and without any latency.
Another area that G&D has been
actively working on is to make
its solutions as intuitive for
the user as possible. How will
this initiative enable G&D systems to better improve existing
bro adcast workflows?
Noelken: We’ve got a number
of features that make operations
very easy, and to enable the KVM
system to be hidden in the background. KVM systems are great
enablers but by this definition, they
are supposed to make users’ lives
easier, instead of bothering them
with another operation layer.
Hence, we include features that
allow users to easily switch to their
needed systems without having
to know about the installation in
detail.
The most obvious one is our
CrossDisplay-Switching, which
allows users to handle a number
of systems simultaneously with a
single set of keyboard and mouse
— without having to bother with
any keyboard shortcuts.
The switching process is done
by simply moving the mouse pointer across the connected screens,
and the system automatically handles the switching process — just as
it should be intuitive for the users
while the infrastructure disappears
in the background. Thus, operators
can dedicate their full concentra-
tion to their actual work.
Further features of G&D userinterfaces include the new scenario-switching function, which
stores complex switching processes
in one single command, as well
as the many options for external
system control. These allow KVM
installations to be combined with
dedicated management systems
and include touch panels for easy
operation.
All these features allow complex KVM systems to remain manageable, giving users the advantage of being able to easily handle
more and more systems that are
required for modern broadcast
workflows.
What other key aspects about
KVM should broadcasters in Asia
be aware about, as they begin to
contemplate emerging technologies such as 4K/UHD and IP?
Noelken: Higher resolutions and
the shift to IP are big topics at the
moment. But from our perspective, broadcasters don’t have to be
afraid of these developments when
considering the implementation of
a KVM system.
The great advantage of KVM
technology is the independence
of any platform or operating system, which, in the end, provides a
homogeneous user platform. As

all the components from the G&D
portfolio provide maximum compatibility, it’s a given that the KVM
system can be adapted to increased
standards.
We recommend that broadcasters make sure their KVM systems are flexible not only to ac-
