0 100 250 Slums along the river edge Key Observations: River overflowing into the city during the 2006 floods. 500m ‘Magar’ (marsh crocodiles) along the river bank posing a potential human-beast conflict 1. There are several slum pockets close to the river within 2. 3. 4. 5. the city limits that lack basic infra structure facilities. There already exists a policy to address this issue which is highlighted in the diagram. There are very few existing parks and gardens accessible to general public within the city limits and very far apart (an approximate 3 Km2 for a population of 2 million). There exists sufficient vacant land along the river edge currently being used as a dump-site or a de facto land-fill which reserves good potential for future development. The river routinely floods during the annual monsoon season since the catchment area has been reduced due to slum encroachments and informal settlements. The river is a habitat for the marsh crocodiles which causes a potential threat to the human population and the vulnerable species alike. 1. High Density In-Situ Redevelopment, Reclaiming part of the land for public parks and amenities Existing Slum 2. Relocation of the entire slum pocket, using the land for public infra structure, parks and amenities. 23
