Elsie had two sisters and three brothers. She attended Eagle School, Sacville School and Persimmon Grove School through the sixth grade then attended the Willard High School where she graduated in 1939. Elsie’s mother went blind early in Elsie’s life and with Elsie being the oldest child she helped in taking care of the other children. During the Great Depression her family lived off of fresh fruits and vegetables. Elsie’s dad had seven fruit trees. “I climbed trees and picked cherries,” said Elsie. “At one time sugar was an item that was rationed and it took too much sugar to get the cherries sweet.” The family had a rough time making it through the great depression. During this time, Elsie would finish her chores such as milking the cows, and work on embroidery pieces. She made pillow cases and a table runner. Elsie married Sammy Lawrence Sell on Dec.31, 1941. Elsie and “Sammy” farmed and raised beef cattle on the farm. Together the couple had a family of three children: Barbara Hills, now deceased; Linda Voris; and Mary Snider. Elsie has seven grand- children and 10 great-grandchildren. Sammy Lawrence passed away in 1998. Elsie worked as a homemaker and took care of her parents. She is the oldest living member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church. She went to live with her daughter in Wal- nut Grove and then she attended the Harold Baptist Church. Elsie’s favorite flower is the rose and the poinsettias and she loves to eat catfish. Elsie would like to live to be 100!
