Resident of the Month,
Hazel Whitted
Hazel Whitted was born Nov. 9, 1921, to par-
ents Andy and Mary Johnson in Douglas County,
as a home birth. Hazel had three siblings. She at-
tended school at Red Oak until the 8th grade.
Hazel met Joe Whitted and the couple married
in 1948. Together they celebrated 32 years of mar-

veteran of the Armed Forces. The couple lived in
Alaska for 7 years, Florida for 2 years and later
North Carolina. Hazel served as a housewife and a
babysitter for the family. Joe and Hazel didn’t have
a family of their own. The couple attended the
Southern Baptist Church.

ryone was able to eat inside. We lived on a farm
and raised chickens, ducks, cattle and horses and
guineas. I would help do the harrowing using horse
power after the plowing was done, getting the field
ready to plant. We planted 10 acres of corn using a
hand held corn planter, a device that had a cup at
the top for the seeds and a metal pipe that went into
the ground and you squeezed out a seed. My hands
were so tired after planting. At harvest time we
would pick the corn by hand and put it in the horse
