AGHF is located at 401 North Medical Drive, Ash Grove, Mo. 65604 417-751-2575 Resident of the Month, Elsie Sell Elsie Sell was born Jan. 22, 1920, to par- ents John Peter and Alice Amy Whittenberg in Greene County, Mo. Elsie had two sisters and three brothers. She attended Eagle School, Sacville School and Persimmon Grove School through the sixth grade then attended the Willard High School where she graduated in 1939. Elsie’s mother went blind early in Elsie’s life and with Elsie being the oldest child she helped in taking care of the other children. During the Great Depression her family lived off of fresh fruits and vegetables. El- sie’s dad had seven fruit trees. “I climbed trees and picked cherries,” said Elsie. “At one time sugar was an item that was ra- tioned and it took too much sugar to get the cherries sweet.” The family had a rough time making it through the great depression. During this time, Elsie would finish her chores such as milking the cows, and work on embroidery pieces. She made pillow cases and a table runner. Elsie married Sammy Lawrence Sell on Dec.31, 1941. Elsie and “Sammy “farmed and raised beef cattle on the farm. Together the couple had a family of three children: Barbara Hills, now deceased; Linda Voris; and Mary Snider. Elsie has seven grandchil- dren and 10 great-grandchildren. Sammy Lawrence passed away in 1998. An interesting story: Elsie’s father was the Justice of the Peace and during his term there was a dog named Bugle Ann in the area. There was a trial being held regarding the change of venue in the yard of the home that he had built. There was a story written called “Bugle Ann” about this fox hunt event that this dog came up missing and the events surrounding this trial. There is also a mov- ie made based on the story. Google it! Elsie worked as a homemaker and took care of her par- ents. She is the oldest living member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church. She went to live with her daughter in Walnut Grove and then she attended the Harold Baptist Church. Elsie’s favorite flower is the rose and the poin- settias and she loves to eat catfish. Elsie would like to live to be 100! Congratulations, Elsie, for being chosen as January Resident of the Month for Ash Grove Healthcare Facility!
