Resident of the Month,
Carl Coppenhaver
Carl Copenhaver was born July
10, 1929, in Ameagle, West Virgin-
ia, in a coal mining town to parents
Ben and Georgie Copenhaver.
Carl’s father worked in the coal
mines for 40 years. Carl had ten
siblings. He attended school at Clear
Fork in West Virginia then two
years at trade school in Los Ange-
les, Calif. On Jan. 31, 1964, he was
married to Opal. Together the cou-
ple made their home in Bois D’Arc,
Mo., on a 20 acre farm where he raised Herford and Black
Angus Cattle.
Carl worked two years in the coal mines and decided
that wasn’t for him, so at the age of 18 he traveled to De-
troit, Mich., where he worked at a metal plating shop earn-
ing $800 in about a year. With that he bought a car and
drove to L.A. to attend a trade school learning how to
work on circuit boards for the first General Electric com-
puter. Later he was transferred from L.A. to Springfield
and was one of five men that started Litton Industries. Carl
was a supervisor there for forty years. He also built the
circuit boards for the Gemini Space program. Carl and
Opal have a family of five children, eleven grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Carl enjoyed trout fishing at Taneycomo, Tablerock,
Stockton and Truman Lake. He likes to watch the Rams
play. Carl toured several National Parks and the San Fran-
cisco Zoo. He has traveled to 48 states, Canada and Mexi-
co. He loved to host fish fries for his family and friends.
He is a member of the Bois D’Arc Baptist Church. He
likes country music, big band music, easy listening and
bluegrass music. Carl enjoyed watching one of his grand-
daughters preform with a local music group at Ash Grove
Healthcare Facility.
Carl’s son, Ron recalls that when they were salmon
fishing in Alaska that Carl had landed a salmon on the
bank and a mama grizzly bear came along and wasn't 3
feet away and took that salmon with no argument from
Carl!
Congratulations, Carl, for being selected Resident of the
Month!
