Resident of the Month , Jessie “ Bud ” Hamby
Jessie was born Oct . 25 , 1926 , in Cedar County , Missouri , near Jerico Springs . He was the fourth born of five children . In 1927 , the family moved to northern Missouri around the town of Tarkio . Jessie worked hard and played hard . When Jessie was about two years old , he crawled under a fence into the field with a mule . Not knowing the danger of getting too close , he was kicked in the jaw . The kick broke his jaw and it had to be wired shut . Story has it that the first words Jessie spoke were “ mule kick .”
When Jessie was older he had several jobs . He milked cows for neighbors , walked corn fields weeding , de tasseling and shucked bushels of corn by hand .
Jessie attended Tarkio High School . He turned 18 in October of his senior year and in January he was drafted into the Navy during WWII . He never finished his senior year but did receive his diploma because of the draft . Jessie was on the Light Cruiser Astoria and did his tour in the Philippines . World War II ended after a year and a half of Jessie ’ s service . He came home with many stories and two large tattoos !
Jessie married Mary Smith in March 1950 . The couple stayed in the Tarkio area and farmed for several years . Together they had two children while living in northern Missouri , Mary Ellen and Benjamin . Looking for work they made the move to the Springfield area . Jessie started working at Lily Tulip and retired after 30 years . A third child , Yvonne , was born after moving to Springfield .
Jessie loves fishing , quail , pheasant and turkey hunting , bowling and golfing . Most important he loves the Lord and raised his children to do the same . He loves to joke and be funny and enjoys life ! Congratulations , Jessie , on being chosen as Ash Grove Healthcare Facilities Resident of the Month !
