Welcome to Our Annual Meeting Edition

URING THE 58TH ASH ANNUAL MEETING & EXPOSITION , the American Society of Hematology ( ASH ) hosted more than 27,000 attendees from around the world as they gathered in San Diego , California , to discuss groundbreaking scientific research and hear the latest advances in patient care . The meeting included nearly 5,000 abstract presentations , 31 Education Program sessions covering key areas of progress in disease biology and clinical practice , and 16 Scientific Program sessions on the hottest areas of hematology research .
With so much science coming out of the annual meeting , ASH Clinical News is publishing an extra issue in which we continue our coverage of the 2016 ASH Annual Meeting , including :
• a life-saving multidisciplinary approach to treating pregnant women with sickle cell disease in Ghana
• reports from two large registries that support for the use of lenalidomide maintenance therapy in the treatment of multiple myeloma
• evidence from a phase III SWOG trial suggesting 7 + 3 should still be the standard of care in acute myeloid leukemia
In this issue , we also take a deep-dive into one of the biggest stories in the hematology world – and the subject of one of the Featured Topic Discussions at the 2016 annual meeting : chimeric antigen receptor T-cell immunotherapy (“ Cartwheels for CAR T-Cell Therapy ?” on page 29 ).
Turn to the “ On Location ” section on page 22 for our full coverage , and stay tuned for more annual meeting highlights in our February issue .
Of course , all work and no play makes hematologists dull docs , so meeting organizers made sure attendees had plenty of time to stay active , network , and share ideas – occasionally through poetry . Read more about the extracurricular activities in “ Heard in the Blogosphere ” on page 34 . We hope you enjoy the bonus issue !
