ASH Emphasizes the Importance of Medical Education Careers With ASH MEI

The American Society of Hematology ( ASH ) Medical Educators Institute ( MEI ) is designed to develop future leaders in hematology education by providing a “ boot camp ” in teaching techniques and critical topics in medical education . Participants will also work with a mentor on a scholarly project to be implemented at their home institutions .
The training is designed to build skills and to position junior faculty for successful careers as clinician educators and mentors to future generations of hematologists .
In 2017 , the institute will accept 20 participants ; it consists of three core activities :
1 . A fall workshop : The program will begin with a mandatory kick-off dinner on October 17 in Washington , DC , followed by a three-day workshop ( October 18-20 ) at ASH Headquarters in Washington , DC . ASH will pay the costs of travel to the program , lodging , and meals for accepted applicants .
2 . A webinar series : The live program will be extended through a series of webinars over the following 12 months .
3 . Mentorship : Faculty for the program will be available to participants as mentors for the completion of a scholarly project as well as for career development .

ASH regularly hosts educational webinars that feature presentations by experts in the field . Past webinar topics have included U . S . Food and Drug Administration updates , Medicare updates relevant to practitioners , and ASH meeting previews . A special series previewing the ASH Meeting on Hematologic Malignancies , which will be held in Chicago , IL , September 8-9 , 2017 , was added in late 2016 . Joseph Connors , MD , BC Cancer Agency Centre for Lymphoid Cancer , Vancouver , BC , and Jonathan W . Friedberg , MD , MMSc , Wilmot Cancer Institute ,
University of Rochester , Rochester , NY , spoke about how clinical practice has evolved in recent years and discussed the important conclusions from the previous year ’ s meeting in a webinar titled “ Focus on Lymphoma .”
The second webinar in this series , “ Focus on Myeloma ” took place in mid-January . Anderson , MD , Dana Farber Cancer Institute , Harvard Medical School , Boston , MA ;
S . Vincent Rajkumar , MD , Edward W . and Betty Knight Scripps Professor of Medicine Division of Hematology , Mayo Clinic , Rochester , MN ; and Noopur Suresh Raje , MD , Massachusetts General Hospital , Boston , MA , touched on the content presented at the previous year ’ s meeting and then previewed what ’ s coming down the pike in clinical practice . ASH Seeks Editor-in-Chief for The Hematologist
ASH is in the initial stage of the selection process for the next Editor-in- Chief of The Hematologist ( term : 2018-2020 ). Candidates with an MD or equivalent medical degree should have the following : a broad and comprehensive knowledge of basic research and clinical investigation in hematology as well as an appreciation of its subspecialty areas ; a distinguished research and publications record ; high standing among peers ; and demonstrated writing , reviewing , and editing skills .
Members of ASH are invited to submit the names of potential candidates , accompanied by a brief , informal endorsement and a description of the candidate ’ s editorial experience , to Juana Llorens , Managing Editor , at jllorens @ hematology . org .
The application deadline is February 1 , 2017 .
