This enchanting boutique hideaway is so beautiful, guests might think they’ve
been cast in some film playing the role of wealthy Mandarin circa 1910. The
hotel’s 18 suites are mostly spacious duplex (2 level) units, although there are 2
single level units, and 2 family units, to choose from as well. The rooms are all
appointed with plush armchairs, recliners and couches, as well as supremely
comfortable canopy beds. The overall décor of the rooms, like that of the rest of
the hotel, incorporates exquisite antique furniture pieces – including lacquered
and gilded Chinese cabinets, and classic mother-of-pearl inlay wooden chairs
– together with modern luxuries such as flat screen TVs, air conditioning, and
personal modems for individual Wi-Fi. The massive bathrooms meanwhile have
a decidedly art deco touch, with fabulous black and white tiled floors, as well
as such modern amenities as rainforest showerheads.
The property itself has been lovingly restored to its former glory – by awardwinning hoteliers Karl Steinberg and Christopher Ong – after having suffered
years of neglect as well as a devastating fire that destroyed a large percentage
of the structure. The restoration has painstakingly replicated the authentic
look of a classic 19th century Anglo-Chinese terraced residence, and the
suites themselves, all on the hotel’s 2nd level, surround an elegant rectangular
courtyard, complete with frangipani trees and colourful floor tiles.

In addition to its prime location on one of Penang’s finest and most intact heritage
streets – one side overlooking St George’s Church, and all just a stone’s throw
from the ornate Goddess of Mercy Temple – the hotel’s main floor is worth
noting, in particular the impressive lobby and reception area, which showcases a
bounty of fine Peranakan cultural antiques, all courtesy of the owner. The lobby
is flanked on one side by the library and breakfast common area, and on the
other by a small rectangular swimming pool and comfortable salon, where a
complimentary afternoon tea is served everyday between 4 and 5pm.
Across the courtyard from the lobby is where diners can take advantage of
Kebaya, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, which serves a 4-course degustation
menu of classic Indo and Straits Chinese Nyonya dishes – many with surprising
new twists. Afterwards, or even during the early afternoon, take time to relax
with a drink in the old-world ambience of Bababar lounge, before ascending
the grand spiral staircase to your sumptuous suite.
