ASCE-NH Newsletter November 2021 | Page 3

PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE

I went to my local CVS on November 1 st and was met with the shock of holiday displays / candy already replacing the Halloween ones . On the way home I stopped at a big box home improvement store and was met with lights , trees , and other holiday decorations while purchasing light bulbs ; I am fairly certain that the end caps / aisles were already prepped for post-Thanksgiving shopping as well . Discussing this with some friends they noted that the holiday items had already taken over the home improvement stores in early October !
Every year I feel like I notice that the holiday season creeps up on us sooner and sooner . With Thanksgiving being my favorite of the bunch , I personally try not to rush November . I love the build-up to the day , the local community events that it spurs ( local food drives , turkey parties , turkey trots , etc .), and having an excuse to break out my turkey fryer . So , take some time to enjoy family / friends , football , drinks , appetizers , side dishes , turkey , desserts , and any other traditions that you may have . It will be here and then over before you know it .
For ASCE-NH , November brings our Joint Meeting with ASCE-VT . This virtuallunchtime presentation is occurring on November 18 th ( 1-PDH for attendees ). The presentation topic is focused on the downtown tunnel rehabilitation project in Lebanon , NH . Gregory Goodrich , P . E ., and Michael Willard , PLA , LEED AP , from VHB will lead the presentation and discuss technical aspects of the project . The rehabilitated tunnel serves as a link connecting the Mascoma River Greenway and Northern Rail Trail with restored vehicle access over the tunnel . The project was completed during this past summer .
Wrapping up November and kicking-off December is the 4 th Annual Engineers Day Conference presented by ASCE-NH and Shea Concrete Products . Like last year , the conference will occur virtually over a 3-day span ( 11 / 30-12 / 2 ). An advertisement is included within this Newsletter and emails continue to be circulated . Once again , Engineer ’ s Day has a diverse and exceptional program that is certain to be a treat , while raising funds for the ASCE-NH Scholarship Fund . We hope everyone takes the opportunity to join us for morning coffee and lunch during the event .
Happy Thanksgiving and I wish you all the best !!
Aaron Cheever , P . E . ASCE-NH President
