replacements with steel stringers in 1992 . The on-going project , which is closing in on the completion of phase 2 , will extend the bridge ’ s design service life to 100-years ; minor repairs and rehab help extend the useful life of a structure , reducing the cost investment needed over its lifetime . Highlights from the presentation included an inside look into the project team ’ s evaluation procedures that guided their determination of the work necessary for the preservation . This $ 8.35M project is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2022 . Closing out the Conference was Dave Smith , P . E . of HNTB Corporation discussing the history and recent advances with tolling along the New Hampshire turnpikes . The first toll in NH was across the Cheshire bridge in Charlestown over the Connecticut River connecting to Springfield VT and was built in 1806 . The more modern tolls as we think of them were first constructed in the 1950s . Since their original construction , the tolls have seen technology advances from money only to tokens ( which provided a 33 % discount ) to the installation of EZPass and now partial open road tolling . Where the state is heading now is all electronic tolling where all lanes are drive through lanes that allow for continuous highway speeds during all toll transactions . The benefits are primarily reductions in traffic congestion and improved safety by greatly reducing the number of accidents occurring at the tolling plazas . There are also additional benefits from reduced costs and reduced energy usage from the braking , stopping , and acceleration required at a traditional plaza . The technology associated with the all electronic tolling is advanced enough that it takes photos of vehicles and license plates , separates vehicles , counts axles , detects dual tires , videos the roadway for quality review , and is accurate 99.95 % of the time .
