'Verukal' is a semi autobiographical novel written by the renowned Malayalam writer Malayattoor Ramakrishnan in 1966. It is the same which won the Kerala Sahitya Academy award in 1967.The novel sheds light on the selfish post modern attitude of a man by forgetting his own existence. The title 'Verukal' (roots) itself implies one's origin or essence.

The novel portrays the lives of many people who believe in tradition and modernity. Reghu is the protagonist who was a Tamil Brahmin from a remote village of Kerala, now settled in Madras with a respected profession and social status. At the beginning of the novel, we can see him as a struggling husband due to the attitudes of his societal wife Gita. She always showed an hesitance towards his Brahmin culture and beliefs.
