DECEMBER 2017
Here, the language learners are trained; not taught.
Learning of any language involves the acquisition of it’s four skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. But, like any other developing country, India face a lot of issues in English language teaching and learning. If we examine the process of mother tongue acquisition by an individual, the difficulty in the process is very minimal. But in the case of second language, the level of difficulty increases as the prevailing methods of the language teaching and learning are vague. In most of the schools in Kerala , the language teaching method involved is the traditional, prescriptive, grammar, translation method where, importance is given to the memorization of grammatical rules. But this method results in people who are thorough in English grammar and other syntactic elements, but not confident and at times, even incapable in communicating it.
