Food for thought

To get to know students and to help them to get to know one another, have each student state his or her name and a favorite food that begins with the first letter of the name. For example:”Hai, my name is Lilly and I like Liver.”As each student introduces himself or herself, he or she must repeat the names and favorite foods of the students who came before. Watch out__it gets tricky for the last person who has to recite all the names and foods!

Personal Boxes

In this activity, each student selects a container of a reasonable size that represents some aspects of his or her personality or personal interest, such as a saucepan. Ask the students to fill that object with other items that represent themselves____ for example, family photos, CDs, sports shoe ___and bring their container back to school. Students can use these objects in the containers as props for a three minute presentation about themselves. You model this activity by encouraging creativity by going first___its important for students to see you as human too! You can include in your container a wooden spoon just because you love cooking, a jar of dirt which shows your interest in gardening and so on. You will learn much about your students with this activity and it will create a bond among students. As each student gives a presentation, you might write a brief thank you note that mentions something specific about the presentation so that each student can take home a special note to share with their parents.
