India has expressed our commitment for achieving this goals by 2030 and as an Initial step we have set National Institute for transforming India (NitiAyog) as National level nodal agencies for achieving SDGs targets. Ministries at national level were mapped to each of 17 SDGs by NitiAyog for achieving the targets without any delay. Now it is the responsibility of the Ministries to convert this mapping in to institutional activities through designing suitable sectorial policies and mandates. It will be better if we frame the sectorial policies and mandates by evaluating our performance on eight Millennium development Goals (MDGs) till 2015. According recent report by United Nations ESCAP, India has made notable progress towards reaching the MDGs but the achievement across goal varies. The performance of India in respect to each MDGs are listed below:

The data from UNDP clearly indicates that the progress which we achieved in respect to MDGs are inconsistent. For instance India has achieved the target of reducing poverty by half, but failed in achieving target of reducing hunger. Although we have achieved gender parity in primary school enrollment we are lagging behind primary school completion. The progress has been made in clean drinking water but access to sanitation facilities remains inadequate .The reason for this inconsistency is because of poor performance of some states in areas of economic growth, spending on health and education in per capita terms, effective delivery of public services, developing extended basic infrastructure networks and promoting gender equality and women empowerments.
