The antagonism between realism

The illusory world of the canvas for the

"real" world of three-dimensional objects, performances in actual time and

space, or the secondhand duplication of reality in mechanically reproduced

images of video, film and photography.

New languages and a new iconography must be invented by the artist, in which alchemical symbols mingle with antique deities, bathing huts as- sume the significance of primeval shrines.

By accepting the photograph directly into the domain of pictorial art,

not as an external memory prop for the painter's handmade re-creation

of reality but as the actual base for the image on canvas.
