Song/album: Don’t Stop me Now by Queen is
guaranteed to release endorphins and make me
feel like you actually can’t stop me (at least till
the end of the song.)
Concert: My husband Wayne and I went to my
daughter’s school music concert at the Melbourne
Recital Centre. The kids were so talented and we
were in such a beautiful venue, and Wayne turned
to me and said “I’ve got an idea”. He disappeared
into the toilet at interval and wrote down a plot
line on his phone which became an episode of
Upper Middle Bogan, in which The Angels song
“Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” is sung
by a private school choir.
A selection of favourites by our guest
contributor. Robyn Butler is an actor,
writer and producer whose work
includes The Librarians and Upper
Middle Bogan. Her latest project is the
feature film Now Add Honey.
Painting: I went to the Tarrawarra Museum in
Healesville and saw their Triumph of Modernism
exhibition which was curated by Edmond Capon
and just completely excellent. Nolan, Brack,
Whitely - all the biggies, but also some artists I
didn’t know and I found it very moving.
Poem: I became a fan of Tony Hoagland after
reading his poetry in Judd Apatow’s collection, I
Found this Funny. I did find Tony Hoagland’s
poems funny, but I also found they made me cry.
Beautiful.
Film: Tootsie. Funny, smart, emotional… and
about something deep. I love this movie so much.
Quote: I do love the inspirational line from Julius
Caesar (by that Shakespeare guy): "There is a tide
in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood,
leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of
their life, is bound in shallows and miseries.” (I
think Nike translates this as “Just Do It”.) I also
very much like the quote from Geena Davis: “If
she can’t see it, she can’t be it” which embodies
Geena’s quest (and mine) for gender equality in
film and television.
TV show: At the moment I completely adore
Catastrophe and Veep. No surprises they both
have feisty female leads and they are ridiculously
funny.
Musical theatre: I have to say WICKED and
Legally Blonde starring my beautiful friend and
on-screen sister, Lucy Durack. She is beyond
magical on stage.
Book: My favourite book this year has been
catching up on Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow
Road to the Deep North, which was astounding.
At the moment however I am reading Persuasion
by Jane Austen - for about the tenth time… I saw
a new edition with a pretty cover in a book shop
and I couldn’t resist. Sucker.
Play: I recently saw Love and Information by
Caryl Churchill at the Malthouse in Melbourne
and it blew me away. It was so imaginatively
written and directed that it was transporting; it’s
exactly what I love about theatre.
