Salvatore Zofrea is one of Australia’s most eminent artists. He was three
times awarded the Sulman prize for subject painting. His work is represented
in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Museum
of Modern Art, New York, and the Vatican Collection. He has also undertaken
mural commissions for major institutions, including the Sydney Opera House.
In 1995 he was awarded a Cavalieri (Knighthood) by the Italian government in
recognition of his contribution to art in Australia.
Many aspects of life have inspired me over
the years of course, but currently my two main
passions are the wildflowers of the Australian
bushland and my involvement with the actual
materials I work with.
I spent the first nine years of my life in
Calabria, Southern Italy. In 1956 at the age of nine I
migrated to Sydney, Australia with my mother and
two sisters to join my father and brothers who had
come here a few years earlier.
