Ben Milne Shepherd’s Gully (St Albans)
It seems to me if work has an inherent value it is
very difficult to find words fitting all that such a
work embodies. Many try, and many late career
artists and some critics seem to achieve something
close. For now though, as an early career artist I
think it would be very difficult to write anything
really honest without it being seen as contrived or
self-promoting or self-depreciating. None of which
are really insightful. I paint, and I will always paint,
and I look forward to that unfolding over the years.
I believe we are tiring of the bombardment of ideas
and words and marketing. It is part of what gives us
relief to look at a good piece of art: stillness,
integrity and meaning without knowledge. This age
does not need more ideas and more concepts, it
needs a greater appreciation of our own humanity,
our own place in the world of things.
The next exhibition of my work is at Maunsell
Wickes Gallery, Paddington in April 2015.
