model in a hijab was not about championing religious choices; rather, I was trying to raise the awareness that we shouldn't be judging others negatively for what they wear just because it's different, and that different can in fact be very beautiful. In Australia, the hijab is sometimes viewed as an oppressive garment – I wanted to showcase it as a stylish garment instead. member, you must rank in the 98th percentile or above for either one of the two tests they provide you with: verbal and diagrammatic. I scored in the 99th percentile for the verbal test, and 98th percentile for the diagrammatic. So I passed! You studied English as one of your majors in your Liberal Studies degree. Can you tell us some of your favourite books? I am a bit of an eclectic book reader – I read from many different genres. My favourite classic is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; my favourite fantasy novel is Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey. In non-fiction, it would have to be Joe Cinque’s Consolation, by Helen Garner. All of these books share a common thread: the laying bare of the human condition; our follies and triumphs as human beings. Happily, I will soon be an author myself, as I am currently drafting my contribution to the upcoming Allen & Unwin anthology, Coming of Age: Australian Muslim Stories. It will be one of my greatest achievements to date! Books are sacred to me.
