IN PASSIONATE PURSUIT:
THE ARLENE AND HAROLD
SCHNITZER COLLECTION AND LEGACY
PORTLAND ART MUSEUM
1219 SW PARK AVE.
1
As we finish 2014, two big exhibitions at
the Portland Art Museum top our visual arts
calendar. One honors the 40th anniversary
of Blue Sky, a fearlessly modern nonprofit
photography gallery that’s helped establish
Portland as a national photography center.
The second marks the art collecting history
of Harold and Arlene Schnitzer, who’ve been
crucial supporters of the arts in Portland
since the early 1960s.
BLUE SKY: THE OREGON CENTER
FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS AT 40
PORTLAND ART MUSEUM
1219 SW PARK AVE.
As one of Portland’s artistic mainstays, Blue
Sky Gallery has been through it all. Now in its
40th year, the gallery devoted to the exploration
of photography in all forms is being honored
by an exhibition at the Portland Art Museum.
Founded in 1975 as an artist collective called
The Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts,
Blue Sky has presented the high-caliber works
of founders Christopher Rauschenberg, Craig
Hickman and Terry Toedtemeier, and hosted
shows from other internationally recognized
artists like Nan Goldin and Robert Frank.
In Passionate Pursuit offers museum-goers a
rare opportunity to peer inside the private collection of Arlene and Harold Schnitzer. Patrons
of culture through and through, the Schnitzer family has assembled a dizzying array of
treasures, from Han Dynasty vessels, to Native
American beadwork, to a sizable representation
of Northwest and West Coast modern and contemporary art. Guest lectures and an intensive
catalog will explore the notion of collecting and
help elucidate the history of our region.

THE ART GYM AT MARYLHURST UNIVERSITY
17600 PACIFIC HWY.
In a group exhibition that begins The Art
Gym’s season, 11 artists get together to poke fun
and indulge in wry wit (a paraprosdokian is a
comedy writing device). The show features work
from Bruce Conkle, Jamie Isenstein, Ralph Pugay, Patrick Rock, Alicia McDaid and more, including painting, sculpture, video, performance,
photography, drawing, prints and site-specific
pieces. [THROUGH DEC. 5]
