36 ArtsKeele Hidden Treasures Heritage Open Day 9 September 10.00am-4.30pm Keele Hall, Keele University Free Entry North Staffordshire was founded on the site, and became Keele University in 1962. Families and children may enjoy the woodland walks; the tours and Raven Mason will be of historical interest and some older children may find them interesting. The Keele estate was owned by the Sneyd family and the first Keele Hall was built in 1580 and rebuilt to Anthony Salvin’s design in 1855-1860. There will be guided tours of the Hall. The Raven Mason Collection based in Keele Hall will be open for visitors to view an exhibition of Mason’s Ironstone China and Porcelain. The Chapel is open to visitors around services. Designed by George Pace and dedicated in 1965, it is the first purpose-designed ecumenical place of worship in the UK. There are services at 10.15am (Ecumenical) and 12.30pm )Catholic Mass) and the Chapel will be open for viewing from 1:30pm onwards. The campus has over 600 acres of landscaped grounds, farmland, woodland and University buildings and facilities. There are leaflets for self-guided walks around the campus and arboretum. Refreshments will be available in Keele Hall. Special Collections and Archives Open All Year by appointment Keele University Free Entry The Special Collections and Archives comprise a variety of material, such as medieval manuscripts, seals, correspondence, ledgers, maps, plans, watercolours, sketches, lantern plates, photographs, rare books and microfilm. The major collections and archives include Arnold Bennett Papers, Wilfred Bloor Papers, Foundations of British Sociology Archive, T. E. Hulme Collection, William Jack Collection, Knight and Sons Papers, A.D. Lindsay Papers, Karl Mannheim Papers, Paget Papers, Ray Pahl Papers, Pape Collection, Raymond Richards Collection, Sneyd Papers, Spode Papers, Tamworth Court Rolls, Warrillow Collection, and J.C. Wedgwood Papers. The Local Collection comprises over 5,000 books, plus pamphlets, newspapers, journals, directories and maps relating to the history of Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire.
