The Chazen’s mission
states that we exhibit art
because “…the visual arts
enrich individual human
experience and because
knowledge of art is
essential to understanding
diverse cultures, past and present.” Sometimes
this enrichment requires engaging difficult
conversations, and such is the case with the
upcoming exhibition Southern Rites, on view
January 25–May 12. The original work in this
series focused on the merger of the last racially
segregated proms in Georgia, and this powerful
exhibition by photojournalist and UW alum,
Gillian Laub, forces us to confront the
simultaneously painful and important realities of
racism in America today. Laub also worked with
The Chazen Ambassadors' Night at the Museum
drew enthusiastic crowds.
