EXHIBITION PREVIEW OLDER WOMEN ROCK THE POTTERIES! The Ageing of British Gerontology Exhibition features photographic portraits of people who have led research and practice in the field of gerontology over the past 40-50 years. They are people who have taken part in a two-year Leverhulme-funded project with Keele University called The Ageing of British Gerontology. The exhibition has been created by artist, photographer and gerontologist Sukey Parnell, working in partnership with Professor Miriam Bernard and Dr Jackie Reynolds (Keele University) and Professor Mo Ray (University of Lincoln). 19 October – 17 November | Opening Hours Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4am KEELE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY ‘Older Women Rock the Potteries!’ is a ground-breaking project created and run by Leah Thorn, a spoken word poet bringing older women together to produce new voices of ageing through her Visiting Fellowship at Keele University’s Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS). Drawing on her previous work with older women designed to raise awareness and explore issues facing women aged 50 and older, using poetry, retro clothes, workshops and conversations. Leah’s work celebrates older women, challenges invisibility, unites across differences and subverts dominant assumptions and prejudices about older women. In collaboration with ILAS and the Keele Centre for Ageing Research, and with funding from Arts Council England, Keele University Art Gallery presents the Older Women Rock collection of ‘poetic clothing’ – clothing embroidered with poetry written by older women. The exhibition will include new poetic clothing and other pieces by such artists as the Cultural Sisters, Dawn Jutton, and Emma Scholin Tipping, with the voices of local women.
