“A Good Farmer (by Sharyn Roth-
stein) talks about this woman who
is a widow and dealing with the
migrant farm worker issue and
INS. Sharyn Rothstein wrote this
play before the president came
info office, but the scenes that run
through this are very current and
there are flashbacks and spectral
discussions that go on here.”
“The Brothers Size (by Tarell Al-
vin McCraney) is a really heavy
piece about two brothers and a
third friend. The names of the
brothers are pulled from African
folklore. There’s this great tribal-
ness that goes through it.”
In addition to being an anni-
versary season, South Camden
Theatre Company is preparing to
submit plays for Barrymore Award
consideration. This is a major
award recognizing excellence in
professional theatre in the Greater
Philadelphia region. As a theatre
company situated just ten min-
utes from the Ben Franklin Bridge,
this is a big step for them. They
already get people from Philadel-
phia to come for their shows, but
being recognized as among the
best in the area would elevate the
company to a higher level.
“I think people would be sur-
prised to see that our theatre is
presented on the same level and
caliber of professionalism to any-
thing you would see in Philadel-
phia,” added Croce. “People need
to know that it’s safe here. It’s safe
to come and see a play in Cam-
den on a Friday or Saturday night.
Nothing is going to happen.”
Getting people into the city re-
mains the theatre’s biggest chal-
lenge, but at least they’re no
longer alone. With each arts
organization to set up shop in
the neighborhood, the battle be-
comes a little easier to win.
