“My research examines political factors that
help developing country producers work
together to make the most of integration into
world markets. Previous research projects
have examined the organic rice sector in rural
Thailand and the electronics industry across
Southeast Asia. My work, done in collaboration
with other international scholars and funded
by domestic and international grants, has
directly influenced policy recommendations
by the World Bank.”
Politics,
Development
and Governance
This cluster revolves around key questions
of governance such as who governs, how
and with what effects? Today, decision
making and implementation include a
wide range of actors: governments,
political parties, social movements,
religious groups, and (transnational)
companies. Internationally, non-state
actors negotiate with states in
multilateral regional and international
fora, in order to find binding resolutions
to global problems such as climate
change, biodiversity, international
terrorism, and global trade. This cluster
also looks into the effects of
governance arrangements, power
imbalances between different actors
involved and the quest for good
governance. It looks into natural
resource management, poverty
reduction, migration, land conflicts
and human rights. We advance
these questions from a number of
disciplines, such as history, political
anthropology, political economy
and international relations.
Dr Joel David Moore
“My research focuses on questions of regime
change and persistence, civil-military
relations, governance and human rights.
Currently, I am working on a book project on
the transformation of military rule in Myanmar
and its consequences. The project’s funding
comes from EU’s Horizon 2020 research
program and runs under the auspices of a
larger international consortium of 20 research
institutions in Europe and Southeast Asia. A
second project looks into the rise of populism
and its consequences. This project is carried
out in collaboration with colleagues from
Hong Kong, the US, Japan and Europe. I am
an Associate with the German Institute of
Global and Area Studies in Hamburg, one of
the biggest area studies institutes in Europe.”
Associate Professor Marco Buente
It is important to note that despite the neat division into clusters outlined above, research in the social sciences and the humanities is often cross-or
multi-disciplinary, and hence a project that straddles two or more clusters is typical and only to be expected.
