Rickie Lee Jones’ songwriting has been characterized as a blend of bravado and vulnerability. She is known for her unique singing style, ranging from swells into near screams into breathy whispers, from pointillist staccato scats into brassy, trumpet-like bursts. In 1977, Jones met Tom Waits, creating a lifelong association. In 1999, Jones was listed at number 30 in the VH1 list of 100 greatest women of rock. She was nominated for six Grammy Awards in 1980, and won the coveted Best New Artist award. Following successful world tours and the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, Jones was also voted Best Jazz Singer by Playboy magazine's critic and reader polls. Jones was covered by Time magazine on her very first professional show, in Boston, and they dubbed her "The Duchess of Coolsville." The past decade has brought additional Grammy nominations and frequent collaborations with notable artists such as Lyle Lovett. In 2012, Jones released The Devil You Know, a collection of covers produced by famed musician Ben Harper.
