Pilates and cycling are similar in
reducing back pain
The research
People with chronic lower back pain are
likely to experience similar benefits from
using a cycling machine or doing Pilates for
six months, says a study from Australia
published in Spine.
A total of 64 people with chronic lower
back pain were split into two groups: eight
weeks of Pilates or eight weeks of using a
cycling machine.
When the programme ended, levels of pain
and disability were lower in the Pilates group
than in the cycling group, but after six
months, there were no long-term differences
between the two treatment groups.
The implications
Pilates therefore provided greater improvements
than cycling at eight weeks, but not at six
months.

Back pain is common and many people
experience long-term problems but not much
is known about what factors influence
long-term outcomes.
A team from Keele University has shed
some light on the situation and published
their findings in The Journal of Pain. Analysis
was carried out on 488 people who had
consulted their physician about lower back
pain and they were contacted at six months
and five years.
Back pain experienced at six months and
five years was predicted by the pain intensity
experienced initially and the participants’
perceptions about if the pain would persist,
