CA 8 visit to ‘’Stedelijk Museum’’ in Amsterdam
A while ago I went to the ‘’Stedelijk Museum’’ in Amsterdam with my arts class. The arts
department had arranged this trip for exam candidates, but most of them preferred studying
over this lovely trip, so the fifth grade could come as well.
We went to Amsterdam by train, and walked to the museum. The moment we closed in on
the museum we were all astonished about how impressive the new building looked. The tub
was so smooth, and so abstract, and more importantly, so very huge, that it left a great
impression on me.
Also the piece of art standing outside was very impressive. The museum itself is already a
fine piece of art in my opinion!
When we went inside, and took care of the usual business (backpacks and coats in lockers)
we were free to roam around the museum and take in the wonderful impressions. And also
do a little assignment, but that is of no major importance. There were lots of galleries, with
pieces of art deriving from hundreds of years ago, to pieces which were recently crafted.
The old art was very beautiful, and very inspiring to look at. You could see every little twist
the artist gave to it, and you could see the endless hours put into these picture perfect
paintings, truly magnificent.
Also the new art was very interesting to look at, especially the galleries with photography.
Such powerful pictures, which have such a clear and impressive meaning. Every picture was
the equivalent of a book. I spent a lot of time admiring these wonderful photographs, and
they have left a deep impression.
But then there was the more abstract part of the museum. With clothing so seemingly
uncomfortable you would rather step on legos than to wear this clothing. Starting with
aluminum bracelets, going all the way to almost complete dresses made of aluminum. And
hats which could very well fit Princes Beatrix and her hat fetish.
Most of the modern abstract art did not grab my attention like the ancient pieces of art. In
my opinion, most of the modern day art, do not take the skillset that was necessary for the
ancient pieces of art. You could paint a blue stripe on red canvas and that would be art
nowadays, whereas you would need to make a picture perfect painting back in the days in
order to be called an artist.
Walking through these galleries gave me more understanding about modern day, and
ancient art. It gave me inspiration through means only museums could offer. I witnessed a
lot of impressive pieces of art, I will never quite forget.
My visit to the ‘’Stedelijk Museum’’ was definitely worth it, and for any art lover out there, I
would greatly recommend it!
