Reflection on Art & Culture 2012-2014
In this final report I will reflect on my personal Art & Culture development in the 4th and
5th grade. The subject Art & Culture is very different from other subjects we have. I think
that art & culture gives a student more knowledge about Arts and Culture in the
Netherlands. Art & Culture is not a subject were we are provided with the things we need
to learn by heart and then reproduce on a test. To me Art & Culture is a subject in which
you can choose what to learn yourself. You can choose what you want to write your CA
about yourself and so you don’t really have to study you just learn everything as you visit
it because you are already interested in it since you chose it yourself.
Art & Culture in the 4 th grade
In the first year of Art & Culture I found it quite a useless subject. This was because all we
did was watch films and write CA’s. Actually we were supposed to visit an opera, a
classical music concert and a ballet. However, we were told that we could also do that
next year, so I only wrote CA’s about films I had seen. Therefore I didn’t learn that much
since all I did was watch a film, write something about it and that was it.
Art & Culture in the 5 th grade
My view on Art & Culture did change during the second year of Art & Culture, since I
actually went to a concert, a museum and a play for my CA’s. Because I chose myself what
museum I would go to and what concert to write my CA about, I did learn things about
modern art, and my view on certain things changed. Moreover, we also did more projects
next to the CA’s which gave me more knowledge about Art & Culture. For example we
did a project about Fluxus, and because we were allowed to choose how we were going
to present the things we learnt about Fluxus, it actually stuck in my head.
Overall I did like Art & Culture, at least the second year. Visiting a concert and a museum
are things we don’t experience with other subjects and that’s what makes Art & Culture
different, and develops my knowledge of culture.
