Let the PlayStep by step instructions for the “stuff
you have on hand” version:
Before you start, consider what you might like to use the finished piece for. If it’s for a journal or book cover - as in the
photo - ensure that you have large pieces of paper grocery bag
available (or other large paper that will handle wet paint.) If
you’re making banners, then you’ll be able to tear the grocery
bag(s). (See images to the left)
1) Find a large paper bag and carefully open it up at the
seams.
2) Use a credit card or paintbrush to layer up several colors
using the process above to reflect on how connection and community impact your life and your wellbeing. Include white and
some black for contrast.
3) Use a sharpie, paintbrush, markers, or pens to add words
and symbols that express your reflections. (Words can be added before you begin to paint - it will be covered up, but the
energy and the intention remain within the layers.)
4) Continue to layer words and color. Now is a good time to
add stencils, stamps, and collage if you’d like. Take the time
to let the layers dry. (A blow dryer can be used to speed up
the process.)
5) Tear your paper into enough pieces for each member of your
group. Or tear/cut to the size you want for your finished piece.
6) Depending on your colors, choose either a piece of computer
paper, or scrap paper for each person. (Something that will
show up well and compliment the painting so far.)
7) Choose a quote, piece of poetry or other words that are
meaningful to you.
8) Outline a shape lightly in pencil that suits your feelings
about connection or that suits the quote you’ve chosen. (We've
chosen a heart.)
9) Using a pencil, lightly create wavy lines inside your shape.
10) Write in your words, using the border and lines as the
guidelines and trying to space the words to fit.
11) Using a black marker, go over the words, adding extra ink
as shown at the tops and bottoms of the letters.
12) If you are using a sewing machine, sew the quote/words
piece to the larger background. Use messy stitches with lots
of backstitching for an informal look. If not, a glue stick works
beautifully or even hand stitched with yarn!
