CA 5 Australian War Memorial General information During the trip to Australia we went to the Australian war memorial. On Thursday the 2 nd of May. We went there with the group of students from the Netherlands and our exchange students. It is almost a two hour drive from Bowral, where we stayed during the exchange. The memorial consists of three parts. The memorial, the museum and a research centre, where students from university come a lot and study national history. The memorial was build in 1941 as a remembrance to all Australian military victims. The memorial lies in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Why did we go to this memorial? It was part of the exchange program to go to the war memorial. Our teachers thought it would give us good insight of Australian military history and let us think about how bad war really is and that we should always fight it. We also went here because it was just a week after ANZAC Day, a sort of liberation day. Around this time of the year a lot of Australians remember the victims of all the wars. Research The Australian war memorial is there for all the armed forces and supporting organisations. Mainly for Australian citizens who died during all the wars the country was in since its independence from the United Kingdom. It is located in Canberra and lies on the northern side of the city. The building is at one end of ANZAC Parade, a wide boulevard which goes thru the centre. On the side of this boulevard there are several other big memorial for each major war the Australians fought in like the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Every year on the 25th of April there is a big parade in which a lot of war veterans walk down the boulevard and people show them respect for what they did for their country.
