Artist’s statement
Gerit Grimm was born and grew up in Halle, German Democratic Republic. In 1995, she finished her apprenticeship, learning the
traditional German trade as a potter at the “Altbürgeler blau-weiss
GmbH” in Bürgel, Germany and worked as a journeyman for Joachim
Jung in Glashagen, Germany. She taught at California State Univer-

sity, Long Beach; Pitzer College; Doane College; and Montana State
University in Bozeman. Her residencies include McColl Center
for Art + Innovation, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, John
Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Arts/Industry program, and Archie
Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. In 2009, Grimm was featured
in the Nebraska Public Television series Nebraska Stories: Fantasia in
Clay. Grimm was the lead demonstrator at Houston’s National Council
on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference and in 2014,
NCECA released the 2013 Demonstrating Artist Gerit Grimm DVD.
In recent years, Grimm has taught and attended workshops and
symposia such as New Energy, International Ceramics Studio (ICS),
Kecskemét, Hungary, C.R.E.T.A Rome, Center for Ceramics, Berlin,
and Burg Giebichenstein, Germany. Last summer Grimm studied
realistic sculpting techniques at the Florence Academy of Art, Italy.
