Coeur d’Alene’s
Public Art Collection
In 1999 the City of Coeur d’Alene
adopted Idaho’s first percent-for-the-arts
ordinance. The CDA Arts Commission
was also created, to shape the vision and
improve the cultural environment of the
City of Coeur d’Alene, enhancing the
growth of industry and commerce while
partnering with various arts organizations
to ensure the role of the arts in the
community.
Today, the CDA Arts Commission has
built an exceptional art collection with
over 100 pieces, showcasing the works
of local, regional and national artists
throughout the city. From Downtown,
Midtown and East Sherman to the
Riverstone and Mill River districts,
this collection defines the community
and distinguishes it from others,
complementing Coeur d’Alene’s many
attributes and serving for posterity.
Through engaging community citizens
in the selection process, the CDA Arts
Commission has fostered a wide variety
of creative sculptures, murals, and utility
box wraps to inspire, stimulate and
encourage the study and presentation
of fine arts through public interest and
participation.
Art in Motion, an exploration of the city’s
public art collection through a refreshing
walk or bike ride on a designated route, is
a popular activity for locals and visitors.
What a great way to experience this
expansive art collection while taking in
the fresh mountain air! The short walking
tour only takes about an hour and is 1.2
miles long; the long biking tour takes two
to four hours, winding through town for
about 13 miles. While the majority of the
art has been commissioned and belongs
to the city, there are some pieces that are
on loan or have been donated, as well as
selected Arts Currents pieces available for
sale.
