n 2015, SVAC completed another project with Jerry Mc-
Kellar titled Dance of Sun & Moon. McKellar describes
this piece as his interpretation of a legend that is common
around the world, in which the sun and moon are husband
and wife who only see each other, briefly, twice a day as
they pass in the sky. This phenomenal depiction can be
seen from Discovery Park, just a block west from McKel-
lar’s first bronze.
While produced in 2016, the fourth piece was not installed
until 2017. Great Spirit’s Gift by Ace Powell is found on
the West side of the Spokane Valley City Hall. It symboliz-
es a figure of a young Native American woman holding an
image of a horse to the sky as an offering to the Spirits.
The fifth bronze, Coup Ponies by Jerry McKellar, makes
an amazing statement as you approach the main entrance
of the Spokane Valley City Hall. McKellar describes the
piece as a depiction of a Plains Indian horse raid. The
stakes were high and the dangers were great, but one of the
highest tribal honors went to the warrior who captured his
enemy’s horses.
While a location has not been determined for the sixth
donation to the city of Spokane Valley, SVAC has already
commissioned a local artist to create their next piece. Rich-
ard Warrington is a sculptor who creates two and three-di-
mensional sculptures. Richard has public art on display
all over the world but this will be his first piece this close
to his home town of Cheney. For more information on the
unveiling of Heart of the Valley, please look for announce-
ments on the Spokane Valley Art Council’s Facebook page
or website: www.spokanevalleyarts.org.
A sneak peak….
The Berry Picker by Nancy McLaughlin was
presented to the city of Spokane Valley in 2011.
While this sculpture was originally placed near
CenterPlace, she was moved to her permanent
location at the entrance to the Spokane Valley City
Hall in 2017. The bronze represents a young woman
of the Blackfoot Tribe, partially covered by a fur
wrap, with a bag sitting at her feet.
