THE HAPPINESS IN THE ACCIDENT

TIM MURPHY ’ S JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF POTTERY

By Sue Eller
46 ART CHOWDER MAGAZINE im Murphy has always enjoyed pottery as an observer and connoisseur , but his path to becoming an accomplished potter began in the early 2000s when his father-in-law , who was working with mosaics , gave him a bag of clay and told him to have some fun . For about a year , Tim played with it , experimenting with coil pots and small sculptures . He thought that if he could just sell one piece for $ 25 , he could buy another bag of clay and have some more fun .
He was fascinated with the versatility of clay and set out on a quest to learn more . He was attracted to a Japanese pottery method called raku , meaning “ the happiness in the accident .”
