“ Fire Flower ”
Even though filmmaking can be difficult for her , she loves it when a cut comes together and she hears the score with the scene , color , and sound mixed for the first time . When the music is added to her films , she describes the experience as making her feelings accessible to other people .
“ I like telling stories because for me , to hold this story in your heart is beautiful , but it can be painful if you ’ re holding it by yourself ,” she said . “ So like when I made ‘ Fire Flower ,’ I wanted other people to feel things that I had felt and to understand places that I had been in my life . I didn ’ t want to hold this story alone anymore .”
To aspiring filmmakers , especially women , Shipman said that if making movies is their love and passion , or they had a similar baptism to the art like she did with “ Winter In the Blood ,” then they should not let anything hold them back , and keep getting back up when they get knocked down .
“ It ’ s my calling and anybody else who feels that calling , I want them to know that they can do it too ,” she said .
