“ It ’ s a tricky balance of keeping the mood but getting that playful sense and a little bit of character , without going too far into whimsey .” As a realism artist , Sheila works hard at balancing a loose but accurate style , with enough detail to show a true representation of the bird , but enough of her own style to “ keep them looking fresh .”
“ The world could use more appreciation for nature and concern for nature and just recognition of the amazing things around us . For me , birds and their habitats and these things worth preserving that give our life meaning and depth , make everything worthwhile .”
Sheila means to create a recollection or depiction of something a viewer already loves , that takes them to a place of peace . She hopes her work can awaken or satisfy an interest in birds or nature and maybe motivate viewers to try and take steps to protect the birds or even just get out and see them .
“ There are several important things for me : capturing the beauty and personality of my bird subjects , conveying the importance of their environment and the plants and trees they rely on to survive , and creating a beautiful , well-crafted work of art . I also want to create a mood with a piece , and hopefully elicit an appreciation by the viewer of how precious these creatures and their habitats really are .”
