I hope you ’ re sitting down , my beloved Chowderheads , because this issue packs a punch ! Not only is it festooned with fabulous fine art features to feast on , but it also conspires to captivate your summer with a creative conflagration of uncommon community confabulations and conferences . ( Ample alliteration achieved . All right – darn ! Okay , I ’ ll stop .)
So , let ’ s not delay . This issue ’ s cover artist is none other than Patti Warashina . The piece on the cover , “ Gossipmongers ,” is indicative of everything she is as an internationally recognized ceramics master . Learn more about Patti in my article in the Artisan section . The visual treats continue in our Wall section . You ’ ll learn about Brian Sostrom and how he evokes emotion through his beautiful artwork in Melody Fyre ’ s article , and Marilee Hudon introduces you to Gay Waldman ’ s exceptional brand of art and how she innovates within several specialties .
Tom Quinn schools us on the ancient skill of painting with egg tempera , and we hear how vivid memories influence artist Ryker Murdock ’ s painting , in his own words . Speaking of words , in our Pages section Karen Mobley gives us the lowdown on the international sensation of National Novel Writing Month ( NANOWRIMO ) and how some regional writers have benefited from the event , while Sue Eller introduces us to the impressive adult and children ’ s book writing of Dr . Jewell Parker Rhodes .
In the pages of our Stage section , feast your eyes on the gorgeous new planned Spokane Valley Performing Arts Center presented by Morgan Marie . Be sure not to miss Tara Mickschl ’ s invitation to embrace a little cosplay as she introduces us to Renaissance fairs and comic conventions of the Northwest , and visit Charity Bagatsing ’ s presentation of the rich culture and festivities of Northwest Asian heritage festivals in the Culture section . As if that ’ s not enough , Eric Cook challenges us to treat our palates to new things in his writeup on ancient wine offerings , and Alex Barrouk shares the culture and passion behind the food at Cochinito Taqueria in Spokane .
I ’ m out of breath just writing it down . Whether this issue encourages you to tackle that great American novel or entices you to attend an arts or culture event , we all hope you enjoy the fruits of our passionate labor in this early summer edition , and we want to see your journey . We ’ d love to see pics of you with your magazines , at an event , writing that novel , or just taking in the arts and culture of our region , so tag us on your social posts or send us your pics , contact @ artchowder . com . You might even see your smug mug in these pages in the near future .
Enjoy and as always , my e-door is open to you all , robin @ artchowder . com . You can also engage with me on Facebook as RD Bishop or Art Chowder Magazine on all social apps , even TikTok . Follow us so we don ’ t get a complex .
P . S . I ’ m secretly hoping some little birdie informs me that a reader plans to attend a Con or Ren Fair dressed as a “ Beloved Chowderhead .” You can bet I ’ m in for that event !
