My photoart reaches beyond the impact of traditional photography . In a significant way , my work expands how the viewer perceives , considers , and interprets photographic media as art .” selected was a notable accomplishment for me . It was a two-year design and engineering feat that I continue to benefit from . It prompted me to do more public artwork . Now , after several years of applying , I ’ ve been accepted and listed on the Washington Public Artist Roster until 2025 .”
Waldman admits to being fortunate to have met several mentors along the way . She credits one of her college art professors , Robert Almquist . “( He ) lit a spark within me . He challenged me and I advanced in drawing and painting because of his encouragement .”
She is also grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with many local artists in the Pacific Northwest . “ Jo Fyfe has been a large part of my life — starting as a mentor , she became a good and valued friend . Since 1989 , Louise Kodis has been the most inspirational to me . I have been a witness to her living an artful life and I ’ ve absorbed much during our friendship .”
In fact , it was Louise who invited Gay to join the board of directors for Inland Craft Warnings where they worked closely building and installing displays , promoting , and planning events . Waldman volunteered for twenty years as one of the event coordinators . She and the group were instrumental in bringing hundreds of artists to Spokane for events like the Inland Crafts Show , a regional event where the board would jury upward of 200 artists to fill 60 slots . It was a showcase of fine contemporary crafts including professional artists ’ works in clay , jewelry , fiber , leather , metal , wood , and photography . After 29 years and rising show expenses , they decided to close in 2011 .
“ Two of the board members I worked with started the Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour . The event is held each year , on the last weekend of September . This year I ’ ll be participating , and I ’ ll be at pottery artist Jill Smith ’ s studio .”
Waldman also hopes to win a spot this year at the MACs annual ArtFest . She loves to meet people face-to-face , something that has been difficult these last two years . “ My most satisfying festival experience is when patrons come into my booth and recognize my artwork from a commission or public art installation . When we meet , it provides a genuine connection between the art and the artist .”
