I ’ m always chasing that impossible thing , that elusive thing .
The thing I couldn ’ t recreate if I tried .
“ Solitude ” there ’ s always something to like but I ’ ve become sort of ruthless in my approach . If something isn ’ t working I move on to something new . If it doesn ’ t work it doesn ’ t work . The immediacy of acrylics is important for experimentation .” For a painter that is constantly editing each piece , the ability for layers to dry quickly allows me to play more with blending , texture , and viscosity which is essential to my process of creation and exploration .
“ I hate to call myself a landscape painter . The paint is more the subject for me , the way it interacts or “ happens ” on the surface is part of my process . The relation between color and paint and texture really drives my work . I only buy like four colors and that ’ s it .” He says this ends up being more enlightening than it is limiting . Sostrom doesn ’ t like working within the lines , but sometimes these self-imposed limits force him outside the box and give him a deeper understanding of his craft . “ Sometimes something happens on the pallet that I love and want to occur on the canvas . I ’ m always chasing that impossible thing , that elusive thing . The thing I couldn ’ t recreate if I tried .”
“ I can be worried about stupid things in life , but in nature I can simply be blown away by the light or a storm . It ’ s the same way with paint . Trying to combine those two things is sort of everything .”
