K
evin admits that the real embryonic
spark to form “more than just a band”
began quite unexpectedly when he was
invited to stand in to drum for a young
group called Men In The Making, who
were rapidly gaining much attention
and popularity because of their
comedic antics during their live music
performances. Kevin and the boys got
along so well that he quickly became
a permanent member of the band. By
osmosis, Kevin then realized that he
too had a quirky comedic side to his
personality and developed this into
several fun characters which he created
and introduced for the show.
The second ingredient, which was later
to become a vital part of Smash Hit
Carnival, entered the scene when Men
In The Making’s front man left the
band and was replaced by singer and
theater actor Michael Hynes. Mike’s
pronounced personality and ingrained
theatrical background were the perfect
fit and formula to take their show to a
higher level of showbiz entertainment.
Not only a terrific vocalist, Mike has
an uncanny ability to impersonate and
sound like many popular artists, which
helps bring a keen sense of authenticity
to his performances. Add his acting
pedigree, plus his creative costume
design and manufacture, and you’re
talking a full-blown show spectacular.
This established itself as a winning
formula for many years, entertaining
millions of followers, and so the title
of a “Spokane Legacy Band” surely
belongs to Men In The Making.
Unfortunately, through illness, the band
eventually was unable to maintain its
rigorous schedule and was forced to
gradually wind down and eventually
disband. Kevin — knowing and
respecting not only the highly successful
formula the band had established, but
also the superb loyal talents of bassist
Steve Springer and front man vocalist
Mike Hynes — wasn’t going to allow
this tried and trusted concept evaporate.
He instead drew upon the experience
they had all gained from Men In The
Making and maintained that trio to
formulate a new and more elaborate
music show spectacular.
