EDWIN DEAKIN
American, 1838- 1923 Donner Lake, n. d. Oil on Canvas
On loan from a family trust, courtesy of The Northwest Gallery in Memory of Rose Nicodemo, Robert Merlo Sr. and Robert Merlo, Jr.
The first piece to meet the eye from the entrance is a tour de force of natural beauty, Edwin Deakin’ s view of Donner Lake in the California Sierras, executed in a meticulously finished style. Born in England, Deakin emigrated to the United States to settle in the San Francisco area. Apparently hidden in storage since the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and only recently brought to light, this is likely the picture’ s first public viewing in over 100 years.
