So important was the horse to the Plains Indian that wealth was commonly measured in their number. A horse raid was conducted at considerable risk; the stakes were high and the dangers were great, but one of the highest tribal honors went to the warrior who captures his enemy’ s horses.
THE NEW CITY HALL A“ SOON-TO-BE” SPOKANE VALLEY LANDMARK
An artist has opportunities to make an impact and Jerry McKellar has certainly accomplished that. If you have not yet seen the progress of the new Spokane Valley City Hall Building being constructed on the site of the old University City Shopping Center location, it is shaping up to be a standout in the Spokane Valley. Along with the architecture itself, Jerry McKellar has been commissioned to add yet another monumental bronze to grace the grounds of the new City Hall. This 16’ high sculpture named Coup Ponies will be installed in the fall of 2017. It is sure to provide a commanding presence in the Spokane Valley for all to see. Along with Coup Ponies, the Spokane Valley Arts Council will be placing another bronze by the late Ace Powell called Great Spirit’ s Gift, as well as moving Berry Picker by Nancy McLaughlin from its current remote location at Mirabeau Park to the new City Hall.
Our lives are built around relationships and the impact they have on us from outside sources. The relationship of Jerry McKellar and Jim Harken has surely enriched the lives of many in our area.
